Event Details

The Art of Compassion Community Reading Group is sponsored by the Art of Compassion and Hickory Public Library.

Rand Brandes, LR Professor Emeritus and Art of Compassion team member will be the facilitator for civil, lively and respectful discussion. The group will discuss The Compassionate Instinct: The Science of Human Goodness, (Norton 2010) edited by Dacher Keltner, Jason Marsh and Jeremy Adam Smith.

Participants should start reading the collection of short essays and excerpts from the beginning of the book on their own. Pages 5-72 will be discussed on 1/16/24.  The inspiration for the reading group came from Dr. Brandes’ work with the Art of Compassion campaign and his belief in the transformative power of literature, especially its ability to initiate and sustain empathy for others and the natural world at large.  He also believes that our public libraries are an essential part of the overall health and well-being of our community.

For adults and older teens. Mature topics will be discussed.
